The contribution of adrenal and gonadal androgens to the growth in height of adolescent males
Gonadal androgens are known to regulate the rate of growth in height during adolescence, particularly in males, but little is known of the role of adrenal androgens in this process. In a prospective multiple regression model we show that both adrenal and gonadal androgens contribute to the increasing rate of growth in height prior to peak height velocity and the decreasing rate of height growth in later adolescence. Such an approach integrates the processes of adaptation and evolution among the biological, sociocultural, environmental, and demographic dimensions over time. Coca Chewing and High-Altitude Stress
Andean Indians who chew coca seek to alleviate symptoms of hunger, thirst, fatigue, cold, and pain. A complete explanation of coca's use should account for these motives. The distribution of coca chewing in the Andes is shown to parallel that of polycythemia. Coca chewing is more common in higher altitudes, with men consistently chewing more than women and children, and chewing is especially common amongst mineworkers. Since androgens stimulate e…
A Biocultural Approach to Salt Taboos
Cultural behavior, when viewed as an extrasomatic adaptation for humans, alters previous interpretations of taboos as harmless placations of the supernatural.
