  • Biface Trimming Elements as Indicators of Tool Rejuvenation Intensity

    Open Access•Aliona Kharevich, A V Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2026•References: 14

Biface trimming elements represent an important diagnostic source of information for studying various stages of bifacial tool production. In Middle Paleolithic assemblages, they often constitute a significant portion of the sample, making them particularly useful for identifying specific technological operations such as primary reduction and shaping of bifacial preforms, edge formation and retouching, working edge rejuvenation, and modification o…

  • Biface Trimming Elements as Indicators of Tool Rejuvenation Intensity

    Aliona Kharevich, K A Kolobova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025

  • Sidorikha Site on the Middle Yenisei

    Open Access•Ekaterina Bocharova, P V Chistyakov et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This paper presents the results of field and analytical studies at the Sidorikha site. This site is a single-layered terminal Upper Paleolithic site located on the right bank of the Sidorikha River, on the shore of the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir. Previous research showed that the cultural layer was accumulated during a short-term occupation episode by a small group around 14.6–14.2 ka cal BP. The limited excavation area and low artifact density did no…

  • Application of Ternary Plots for Data Visualization and Analysis in Paleolithic Studies

    Open Access•K A Kolobova, K Kolobova et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The article presents a methodological approach to the application of ternary plots for the multivariate analysis and visualization of archaeological data in Paleolithic studies. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for the widespread adoption of effective tools for interpreting complex relationships within three-component systems characteristic of typological, process, and taphonomic studies in Paleolithic studies. An undeniable a…

  • Industry of Okladnikov Cave Layer 3 in the Context of the Sibiryachikha Complexes of the Altai Mountains

Open Access•K Kolobova, Igor Tyugashev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025•References: 11

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of lithics from layer 3 of Okladnikov Cave and their relevance to the Sibiryachikha industries of the Altai Mountains. Attribute analysis has shown that the industry of layer 3 demonstrates technological and typological similarities with the Sibiryachikha industries. These include radial flaking with an offset technological axis, a predominance of convergent side-scrapers, and a series o…

  • Practical Application of Seriation for the Analysis of Archaeological Data

    K Kolobova, I E Tyugashev et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

The article describes the basic algorithms for the practical application of various seriation methods for the classification, correlation and systematisation of archaeological data. Designed for the relative dating of archaeological complexes, seriation has not lost its scientific relevance and is used in all areas of archaeology, even today, when absolute dating methods are available to researchers. The analysis of multilayered Paleolithic compl…

  • Industry of Okladnikov Cave Layer 3 in the Context of the Sibiryachikha Complexes of the Altai Mountains

    K Kolobova, I E Tyugashev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • Comparing Lithic Assemblages from Layers 1–3 in Okladnikov Cave

    Open Access•I E Tyugashev, Igor Tyugashev•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

The article reviews the updated data on the lithic collection from layers 1–3 of Okladnikov Cave. Due to the source base expansion, the previously formulated conclusion about the lithic industry homogeneity of layers 1–3 is verified. As a result, some technological differences were revealed. The radial core debordant flakes are dominant among all technical debitage in layer 1, while the lateral debordant flakes are predominant in layers 2 and 3. …

  • Research of the Middle Paleolithic Complexes in the Chagyrskaya Cave in the Field Season of 2024

    Open Access•K Kolobova, N Berezina et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

This article presents the results of field studies in the Chagyrskaya cave – a key site of the Sibiryachikha phase of the Middle Paleolithic in the Altai – which were done in 2024. In that excavation season, the main focus of excavation works was on studying stratigraphy of the site, searching for anthropological remains, and obtaining a collection of lithic artifacts for technical and typological analysis. Two culture-bearing layers, 6a and 6c/1…

  • Study of the Upper Paleolithic Site Sabanikha-3

Open Access•Vladimir Kharevich, Aliona Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

The article provides new materials from the Early Upper Paleolithic site Sabanikha-3 (Middle Yenisei), obtained during the 2024 fieldwork, which is intended to continue the site research begun in 2020, 2023–2023. The research is aimed to expand the evidence base for the Early Upper Paleolithic of the region. Main pit 3 (2024), covering an area of 9.5 sq. m, was connected to the southwestern walls of main pits 1 and 2. The main concentration of ar…

  • Variability in the Sibiryachikha Assemblages of the Altai Mountains (Based on Materials from Okladnikov Cave Layer 2)

    K Kolobova, I E Tyugashev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023

    Open Access•K Kolobova, Igor Tyugashev et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 12

This article, based on new data from comprehensive studies of assemblage from Okladnikov Cave layer 2, explores the variability of Middle Paleolithic Sibiryachikha variant of the Altai Mountains. Using methods such as scar pattern analysis, experimental use-wear analysis, attributive analysis, etc., we specify the characteristics of the assemblage by extending the nomenclature of technical fl akes relating to radial fl aking, evaluating the share…

  • The east of the Neanderthal universe

Open Access•K Kolobova, Aliona Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2023

Late European Neanderthals, associated with the Micoquian techno-complex, spread over vast area from Western Europe to the Altai. There were no sites found in the territories to the east of the Volga region. The key site of the Eastern Micoquian, Sukhaya Mechetka, which was discovered in 1951 in the Volgograd region, was for a long time the eastern outpost of Neanderthals in Eurasia. In the last five years, the results of paleogenetic analysis ha…
