  • Biface Trimming Elements as Indicators of Tool Rejuvenation Intensity

    Open Access•Aliona Kharevich, A V Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2026•References: 14

Biface trimming elements represent an important diagnostic source of information for studying various stages of bifacial tool production. In Middle Paleolithic assemblages, they often constitute a significant portion of the sample, making them particularly useful for identifying specific technological operations such as primary reduction and shaping of bifacial preforms, edge formation and retouching, working edge rejuvenation, and modification o…

    Aliona Kharevich, K A Kolobova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025

    Open Access•M B Kozlikin, D R Plotnikov et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

This article introduces into scientific use a collection of unshaped bone tools discovered in Kaminnaya Cave in the northwest Altai. The cultural and chronological column of this site currently represents the most complete sequence of the final Upper Paleolithic in the region. The cave lithic industry has been described in detail previously. In order to identify possible practice of bone use in toolmaking activities of the late Paleolithic inhabi…

  • Morphometric Study of Cut Marks on Faunal Remains from Chagyrskaya Cave

    Open Access•Anastasiya Kolyasnikova, K A Kolobova et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2025

The authors define the types of tools used by Neanderthals of Chagyrskaya Cave (Altai) for the terminal stages of carcass processing (meat cutting) through a comprehensive morphometric analysis of cut marks on paleofaunal remains. The research methodology integrates traditional metric analysis with a modern geometric morphometric approach, enabling quantitative assessment of the microprofile shape of cut marks. Using an industrial profilometer, 2…

    Open Access•Vladimir Kharevich, Aliona Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This paper presents a new approach to assessing the integrity of flaking sequences at Paleolithic sites. It combines experimental modeling with subsequent attribute analysis of the archaeological collection. The method is based on changes in the proportion of various technical spalls at different stages of core and bifacial reduction, as well as changes in the sizes of cortical flakes. This methodology was applied to reconstruct the strategy of t…

  • The east of the Neanderthal universe

Open Access•K Kolobova, Aliona Kharevich et al.•ARTICLE•Camera praehistorica•2023

Late European Neanderthals, associated with the Micoquian techno-complex, spread over vast area from Western Europe to the Altai. There were no sites found in the territories to the east of the Volga region. The key site of the Eastern Micoquian, Sukhaya Mechetka, which was discovered in 1951 in the Volgograd region, was for a long time the eastern outpost of Neanderthals in Eurasia. In the last five years, the results of paleogenetic analysis ha…

This article highlights the results of comprehensive studies at Sartan cave and open-air sites (MIS 2) in the northwestern Altai. Their stratigraphic profiles include loam layers, often with geest. Absolute dates are discussed, as well as the relative stratigraphic position of lithological layers within profiles of stratified Pleistocene sites, using available paleoenvironmental data. The Sartan sites of the region are base-camps with a complete …

  • Natural Scientifi c and Archaeological Evidence from the Pleistocene Layers of Kaminnaya Cave

    Open Access•Sergey Markin•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2021

This article discusses the results of a comprehensive study of Pleistocene sediments from Kaminnaya Cave located in mid-elevation erosional middle mountains of the Northwestern Altai, where a variety of material evidence on ancient human environment and culture has been found. The stratigraphic sequences of the site are constituted by loamy deposits often enriched by products of bedrock disintegration. Geomorphology, stratigraphy, biostratigraphy…

  • Percussive-Abrasive Stone Tools from Chagyrskaya Cave

    Open Access•M V Seletsky, А Yu Fedorchenko et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This article presents a comprehensive study of percussive-abrasive active stone tools from Chagyrskaya Cave, using experimental use-wear and statistical methods, supplemented by 3D-modeling. Experiments combined with use- wear analysis allowed us to determine the functions of these tools by comparing the working surfaces and use-wear traces in the Chagyrskaya samples with those in the reference samples. As a result, we identified 19 retouchers, f…

  • Dietary evidence from Central Asian Neanderthals

    Open Access•Domingo C Salazar-García, Domingo C Salazar‐garcía et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2021•Cited by: 16•References: 97

Neanderthals are known primarily from their habitation of Western Eurasia, but they also populated large expanses of Northern Asia for thousands of years. Owing to a sparse archaeological record, relatively little is known about these eastern Neanderthal populations. Unlike in their western range, there are limited zooarchaeological and paleobotanical studies that inform us about the nature of their subsistence. Here, we perform a combined analys…

  • Complex Study of a Personal Ornament Made on a Marmot Incisor from the Early Holocene Complex of Kaminnaya Cave (Russian Altai)

K Kolobova, Lydia Zotkina et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2021•Cited by: 2

The article presents the oldest evidence of non- utilitarian use of marmot incisors in North Asia. The ornamented marmot incisor comes from the Early Holocene layer of the Kaminnaya Cave. The artifact was studied by methods of high precision three-dimensional modeling, experiment and traceological analysis. In order to obtain detailed information on the morphological characteristics of the artificial relief, a high-precision three-dimensional sca…

    Open Access•Alisa Zubova, Aleksandr Kulkov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 42

We describe a likely case of chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS) in a Neanderthal skeletal sample from Chagyrskaya Cave, in the Altai Mountains. Signs of CMS were recorded in the Chagyrskaya 57 specimen, which is a fragment of a left maxilla. Alveoli of the upper fi rst molar are partially preserved, and so are the second and third upper molars, with adjacent parts of the walls, and the fl oor of the maxillary sinus. The fragment was found in layer…
