  • Naming and Namelessness

    Open Access•Scott Maclochlainn•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 47

In describing how naming is a universal and critical space in which to understand the nature of recognition, this review argues that the inherent tension between the fixity and flow of the name allows us to better think about the underlying concerns in the study of language, the politics of designation, and anthropology's own reliance on naming practices. By looking to a number of different genealogies in anthropology, the article describes how s…

  • Of Congregations and Corporations

    Scott Maclochlainn•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•2019

This article describes how, amidst Christian schism in the Philippines, the corporate form emerges as a central facet through which religious communities come to be understood. Centered on the legal fallout of a schism in the United Methodist Church in the Philippines that began in 2011, the article discusses how the schism foregrounded the necessary legal identities of religious groups in the Philippines as corporations. Having inherited the cor…

  • Brand displaced

    Open Access•Scott Maclochlainn•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 22

In this paper, I examine the creation of prop "non-brands" in the United States movie and television industry. In taking up the work of Independent Studio Services, a large prop house located in California, I look to how fictive and generic alternatives to "real" brands replicate brandedness without any brand. As product placement in movies and television becomes increasingly important as a form of brand promotion, the prop-brand cuts out a uniqu…

  • Divinely Generic

    Open Access•Scott Maclochlainn•ARTICLE•Signs and Society•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 21

In this article I examine the practice of Bible translation and the underlying sets of Christian ideologies regarding the commensurability of linguistic forms. Based on ethnographic research conducted at a biannual Bible translation workshop in Mindoro, Philippines, in 2013, during which the Bible was translated into three Mangyan languages, I argue that the degree to which the actual linguistic forms in the scriptures are divinely inspired often…
