A Proto-Maeotian Horseman Burial From Adygea
This paper reports on a proto-Maeotian burial complex of a horseman warrior discovered in 2023 in the foothills of Adygea (N 44.22787800, E 40.12983900). The burial assemblage included weaponry, notably an axe-scepter, a Colchian fibula, an equine skeleton, and a set of bronze horse bridles contemporary with the Novocherkassk treasure. This article presents materials from a newly discovered burial ground of the Protomeotian group of sites, located in the foothills of Adygea on the Azishsky Ridge near the village of Dakhovskaya. This study was based on the material of two anthropological series originating from the territory of the kurgan cemetery sites at Volna 1 and the Starokorsunskaya settlement 2. Volna 1 is located 10 km from the village of Taman, and according to archaeologists, it could have been a previously unknown Greek Apoykia.
