A mixed-method evaluation of the impact of introducing 52 digital X-ray systems in Ghanaian health facilities on tuberculosis case finding and quality of care
Between end 2016 and early 2018, 52 digital X-ray systems were installed in public health facilities across Ghana under the ORIO program, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Ghana. The project aimed to detect more people with TB by expanding access to digital radiology, supported by training, maintenance, and project management. This evaluation assessed the project’s contribution to TB case finding, diagnostic ca…
Knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to seeking treatment for tuberculosis and diabetes in Ghana
Background: The global tuberculosis (TB) burden remains high, though several interventions have been instituted to fight the TB epidemic. Community perception and understanding play a critical role in health-seeking behaviors, ultimately influencing the acceptance and effectiveness of control efforts. In observance of World Tuberculosis (TB) Day in 2022 and 2023, we engaged the community and sought their understanding of TB and diabetes mellitus …
Evaluating the impact of decentralized testing for tuberculosis in Ghana
Poor geographical accessibility to tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic services in Ghana is a key barrier to timely diagnosis. Decentralizing molecular testing for TB could improve TB case notification among underserved populations and enhance treatment initiation while avoiding unnecessary treatments. This study aims to project the epidemiological impact of decentralized TB testing at the country level. We developed an individual-based simulation of th…
Use of the urine Determine LAM test in the context of tuberculosis diagnosis among inpatients with HIV in Ghana
Background: The urine Determine LAM test has the potential to identify tuberculosis (TB) and reduce early mortality among people living with HIV. However, implementation of the test in practice has been slow. We aimed to understand how a Determine LAM intervention was received and worked in a Ghanaian in-hospital context. Design/Methods: Nested in a Determine LAM intervention study, we conducted a two-phase explanatory sequential mixed methods st…
Tobacco smoking clusters in households affected by tuberculosis in an individual participant data meta-analysis of national tuberculosis prevalence surveys
Tuberculosis (TB) and non-communicable diseases (NCD) share predisposing risk factors. TB-associated NCD might cluster within households affected with TB requiring shared prevention and care strategies. We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis of national TB prevalence surveys to determine whether NCD cluster in members of households with TB. We identified eligible surveys that reported at least one NCD or NCD risk factor through…
Effectiveness And Safety Assessment Of Mist tonica , A Herbal Haematinic
Anaemia is a widespread public health problem, and in Ghana it is the fourth leading cause of hospital admissions and the second factor contributing to death. Mist Tonica, an herbal haematinic produced by the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine (CSRPM), Ghana, was assessed for its effectiveness and safety in humans after Ethics Committee approval. Clinically established anaemic-patients aged, 13 years and above, with haemoglobin le…
