Facial Image of Biblical Jews from Israel
The present report deals with reconstructing the facial shapes of ancient inhabitants of Israel based on their cranial remains. The skulls of a male from the Hellenistic period and a female from the Roman period have been reconstructed. They were restored using the most recently developed programs in anthropological facial reconstruction, especially that of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Balueva & …

Ohalo II H2
The discovery of well‐preserved human remains at the site of Ohalo II in the northern Jordan Valley substantially augments the meager fossil record of the Levantine late Upper Pleistocene. The Ohalo II H2 specimen, dated to ca. 19,000 B.P., is the most complete early Epipaleolithic hominid discovered in Israel and promises to contribute to the clarification of a number of problematic issues in the local evolution of anatomically modern humans. In…

Variables affecting dental fluctuating asymmetry in human isolates
The aims of the present study are to 1) determine and describe levels of dental fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in a highly endogamous human group; 2) evaluate the effects of various FA measures on perceived FA levels and their interrelationships; 3) study the connections between dental variables (tooth size, class, position, type, location and dimension) and FA levels; and 4) estimate the interrelationships between dental FA measures. The study was c…
Ohalo II man-unusual findings in the anterior rib cage and shoulder girdle of a 19000-year-old specimen
The analysis of the skeletal remains of Ohalo II man, aged 30-40 years at death and dated to 19 000 years BP, shows advanced and highly unusual ossification of the lower costosternal cartilage; the right humerus is morphologically larger and considerably more robust than the left; degenerative changes were noted unilaterally in the right glenohumeral, acromioclavicular and claviculosternal joints. There is a marked asymmetry of the atlas, axis an…
The Excavations in Kebara Cave, Mt. Carmel [and Comments and Replies]
This paper summarizes the results of recent excavations (1982-90) at the Middle Paleolithic site of Kebara Cave. Work at the cave by earlier excavators is also discussed. Although analysis of the Kebara materials is still far from completed, an overview of the current stage of the investigations includes (1) a synthesis of the site's complex stratigraphy and dating; (2) a description of the spatial patterning of hearths, ash lenses, and bone and …
Unusual pathological condition in the lower extremities of a skeleton from ancient Israel
We report here an unusual pathology in a 1,500‐year‐old skeleton recovered from Bet Guvrin, Israel. The pathological changes in the lower extremities and the diagnostic difficulties are presented. We attribute this condition to Madura foot, found primarily in tropical and subtropical regions, although other diagnoses are possible and are noted. We discuss its appearance in the region in light of the historical context. © 1992 Wiley‐Liss, Inc
The Emergence of Modern Humans
This collection of essays, written by some of the leading scholars in the field, deals with current issues concerning the development and emergence of a modern human biological and behavioural pattern from the earlier models inferred for late archaic man
A reappraisal of the anatomical basis for speech in Middle Palaeolithic hominids
The recovery of a fossil hominid skeleton with a complete hyoid bone from Mousterian deposits in Kebara Cave, Israel, provides new evidence pertaining to the evolution of speech. Previous studies of speech in the Middle Palaeolithic (most notably those on Neandertals) have focused on the basicranium as an indicator of speech capabilities. This work critiques the use of the basicranium and instead presents the anatomical relations of the hyoid and…

The anterior buccal mandibular depressions
The frequency of an anterior buccal depression in the mandible (ABMD), or a mental fossa, is reported on 970 human mandibles of various groups and different ages, as well as in 38 mandibles of nonhuman primates. The ontogenetic and phylogenetic significance of the results relevant to development of a chin in Homo sapiens is discussed. The ABMD is also compared with the occurrence of a lingual mandibular depression

Kebara 2 Neanderthal pelvis
The renewed excavations at the Kebara Cave revealed a Neanderthal skeleton dated at about 50–55,000 years B.P. The pelvis of this individual is the most intact Neanderthal pelvis yet discovered, presenting for the first time a complete inlet. Although the superior pubic ramus is extremely long, as typically seen in the Neanderthals, the size of the pelvic inlet is comparable to that of modern Homo sapiens. The length of the superior pubic ramus i…

Directional dental asymmetry in South Sinai Bedouin isolates
Dental casts of 242 Bedouin children were used to study directional asymmetry (DA). Results of Student's t-test pair comparison showed that for permanent dentition, 4 out of 24 DA measures were statistically significant whereas for deciduous dentition, 8 out of 20 measures were significant (p less than 0.05). The magnitude of DA was on the average 1% of the total size of the tooth. No preference regarding dimension (buccolingual, mesiodistal) or …

Changes in morphology of human populations due to migration and selection
Anthropological characteristics of 115 young Israeli-born male Jews (18-25 years), offspring of immigrants from Russia and Poland, are described. The morphological changes in the young group are compared with a sample of 1914 from the "parent" group, and with two non-Jewish European groups--1547 in the 18-25 year age range and 3711 in the 40-60 age range. The results indicate a "migrational effect" acting in young migrant offspring as expressed i…
ABO‐typing of ancient skeletons from Israel
Sixty‐eight ancient skeletons, unearthed at Jerusalem and En Gedi and, according to the archeological data belonging to Jewish residents of these places from about 1,600 to 2,000 years ago, were ABO‐typed by means of the hemagglutination‐inhibition test. The blood groups of 13 skeletons were undiagnosable and the remaining 55 showed the following distribution: 30.91% A‐group, 14.54% B‐group, 50.91% AB‐group and 3.64% O‐group. According to these f…
