Struggling to Maintain Identity
This paper reports the findings of a 1981 survey of Lumbee Indians in Baltimore. Ethnic identity has been and continues to be an issue for this community and the survey was addressed to three central questions around the issue: Are Baltimore Indians still culturally assimilated but structurally separated from dominant society, a finding in a 1971 ethnography of this community? The theoretical concern of this essay is with economic structures that are considered to be causally prior to the perpetuation of underdevelopment. Industrial capitalism as a mode of production is briefly discussed to identify specific properties and processes that produce inequalities. Comparative ethnology now provides the data by which all known cultures can be usefully arrayed in an evolutionary series on the basis of their subsistence systems.
