Mentorship as an overlooked dimension of research capacity strengthening
Mentorship in global health remains an overlooked dimension of research partnerships. Commitment to effective mentorship models requires value-driven approaches. This includes having an understanding of (1) what mentorship means across different cultural and hierarchical boundaries in the health research environment, and (2) addressing entrenched power asymmetries across different aspects including funding, leadership, data and outputs, and capac…
Whose child is it? A psychological perspective on responsibility and accountability in decision making on nurturing care in early childhood
In this comment, we examine the implications of decolonization on decision making in childcare (Kgatla, 2018). Self-empowerment as a cornerstone of change, long part of community empowerment, has finally achieved recognition within the literature on global health and nurturing care (Charani et al., 2022; Sharm & Sam-Agudu, 2023). Varied perspectives discuss the global benefits of shifting responsibility in decision making, for humanizing of the l…
Antiracism in leading public health universities, journals and funders
INTRODUCTION: Two years since the murder of George Floyd, there has been unprecedented attention to racial justice by global public health organisations. Still, there is scepticism that attention alone will lead to real change. METHODS: We identified the highest-ranked 15 public health universities, academic journals and funding agencies, and used a standardised data extraction template to analyse the organisation's governance structures, leaders…
Human-centred mentorship in global health research
The predictive validity of Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-III at 2 years for later general abilities
Using data from a rural cohort in Pakistan (N = 1298), the study examined the predictive validity of the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID) 3 rd edition on later tests of general abilities. The BSID III subscales (cognitive, language and motor) were administered at 2 years; general ability was assessed using the Verbal, Performance and Full-Scale score from the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) III a…
Experiences of identifying pre-school children with disabilities in resource limited settings – an account from Malawi, Pakistan and Uganda
Although access to effective medical care for acutely sick children has improved globally, the number of children surviving but who may not be thriving due to disability, is increasing. This study aimed to understand the views of health professionals, educators and caregivers of pre-school children with disabilities in Malawi, Pakistan and Uganda regarding early identification, referral and support. Using applied thematic analysis, we identified …
A Nationwide Virtual Research Education Program for Medical Students in Pakistan
Introduction: Equipping young medical trainees with fundamental research skills can be a promising strategy to address the need for professionals who can understand and responsibly communicate evolving scientific evidence during a pandemic. Despite an ardent interest to partake in research, most educational institutions in Pakistan and other low-middle income countries have not yet adopted a comprehensive strategy for research skills education. T…
Scaling Nurturing Care Interventions in the Health Sector
Nurturing care interventions postulated on strengthening caregiver-child relationships have proven to be effective for improving early childhood development outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. Hence, a scale-up of the interventions has been recommended with an emphasis on the health sector given the contact with families in the critical first 3 years of life. However, an effective scale-up of an integrated intervention through healthcar…
Development and feasibility testing of the mental status examination scale to assess functional status of young, hospitalized children in Pakistan
Mood, cognitive and physical functioning have been widely studied in hospitalized pediatric patients. They fall under mental status examination (MSE). Even though there are several MSE scales, they need to be adapted to meet the needs of hospitalized children. The purpose of this study was to describe the development and feasiblity of MSE tool to assess functional status of young children during hospitalization, explore and examine differences of…
Funders
Global health research is mired by inequities, some of which are linked to current approaches to research funding. The role of funders and donors in achieving greater equity in global health research needs to be clearly defined. Imbalances of power and resources between high income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is such that many funding approaches do not centre the role of LMIC researchers in shaping global health …
Implementation and Evaluation of a Social Media-Based Communication Strategy to Enhance Employee Engagement
Social media can complement organizational communication strategy which is integral to employee engagement. However, successful case studies which can allow replication are limited. The objective of the study is to describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a social media-based communication strategy in a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan. The leadership of the pediatric service line developed an intervention plan to engage the emplo…
Validation of the Infant and Young Child Development (Iycd) Indicators in Three Countries
The IYCD is a simple-to-use caregiver report tool enabling population level assessment of child development for children aged 0-3 years which performs well across three countries on three continents to provide reliable estimates of young children's developmental status
Influences on catch-up growth using relative versus absolute metrics
The study children demonstrated improved growth from 24 to 60 months of age, but only a subset had positive changes in HAD and WAD. The same environmental factors were associated with growth from 24 to 60 months regardless of metric used (change in HAZ or HAD, or WAZ and WAD)
Chronic Maternal Depressive Symptoms Are Associated With Reduced Socio-Emotional Development in Children at 2 Years of Age
Background: Maternal depression affects a high proportion of women during the antenatal and postnatal period in low- and middle-income countries. While maternal depression is recognized as a significant risk for poor early child development that warrants interventions, the effects of chronic maternal depression on children's development are less understood. Objective: To determine the association of chronicity of maternal depressive symptoms and …
Early childhood growth and cognitive outcomes
Although many studies around the world hope to measure or improve developmental progress in children to promote community flourishing and productivity, growth is sometimes used as a surrogate because cognitive skills are more difficult to measure. Our objective was to assess how childhood measures of anthropometry correlate with measures of child development in low-income settings with high prevalence of poor nutrition and enteric disease, to inf…
Maternal scaffolding and home stimulation
This study contributes to the understanding of how early parenting interventions implemented in low- and middle-income countries during the first 2 years of children's lives are sustained longitudinally to promote cognitive skills in preschoolers. We employed path analytic procedures to examine 2 family processes-the quality of home stimulation and maternal scaffolding behaviors-as underlying mechanisms through which a responsive stimulation inte…
