Specificity and objecthood in Tagalog
The relationship between the semantic function of noun phrases and the way(s) in which they are realized morphosyntactically in a clause has been a topic of intensive research in the typological literature as well as for theories concerned with the syntax–semantics interface. Right Node Raising is the term used by linguists to refer to a construction in which a shared argument surfaces at the right periphery of a coordinate structure (e.g.Phil loves, but Mary hates, Greek tragedies). This paper begins by introducing some of the basic properties of this construction and then moves on to present and compare the main analytical approaches to this construction
Word Order and Prosodic-Structure Constraints in Tagalog
This paper is concerned with two apparently unrelated word-order facts in Tagalog: In interrogative sentences, frontedwh-phrases follow the complementizer (Comp-WhP order), and in both interrogative and noninterrogative sentences, the subject follows the verb (verb-initial order). It is argued that neither of these word orders reflects a word order that is expected on the basis of the syntactic structure alone. Instead, a unified explanation for …
