  • The use of portable OSL and IRSL measurements of NaCl in low dose assessments following a radiological or nuclear emergency

Open Access•Hamdan Alghamdi, Hamdan S Alghamdi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

During recovery phases following a nuclear or radiological incident analyses of doses received by members of the public and responders are often required. Several methods have been investigated for use at different timescales after the incident, including assessments based on measurements of materials present at the time of the incident. Common salt has previously been shown to have potential for retrospective dosimetry in the mGy dose range usin…

  • Urban gardens in Antiquity

    Open Access•Genevieve Holdridge, Ian A Simpson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Referencias: 19

In the Eastern Mediterranean, where some of the earliest known urban cities are located, relatively little is known about urban soils in archaeological contexts. Red Mediterranean Soil (RMS) is a hallmark of the Mediterranean region while the impact of long-term urbanization on RMS material is understudied. In this article we present evidence of RMS from the longue durée cityscape of Jerash, Jordan, to determine how humans have used, modified and…

  • Agricultural terraces in the Mediterranean

Open Access•Sam Turner, Timothy Kinnaird et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Citada por: 30•Referencias: 37

The history of agricultural terraces remains poorly understood due to problems in dating their construction and use. This has hampered broader research on their significance, limiting knowledge of past agricultural practices and the long-term investment choices of rural communities. The authors apply OSL profiling and dating to the sediments associated with agricultural terraces across the Mediterranean region to date their construction and use. …

  • Dynamic beach response to changing storminess of Unst, Shetland

    John Preston, D C W Sanderson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2019•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 15

We present major new findings on the stability of Norse landing places on the island of Unst, Shetland, using a combination of geomorphology, OSL dating, fetch analysis, and sediment transport modeling. Islanders needed reliable access to the sea, and exploited sandy beaches as safe landing places. The persistence of beaches was important for long-term continuity of settlement and could be threatened by stormy conditions. Sediment modeling undert…

    Open Access•Anna Píšková, Matěj Roman et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 6

We have studied laminated sediments from Lake Esmeralda, Vega Island, in order to reconstruct its history. We describe both inorganic and organic components of the sediment using a combination of the following analytical methods: x-ray fluorescence (XRF), x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility measurement, chemical analysis for determination of cation exchange capacity, grain size determination, geochemical analyses (total inorganic car…

    Open Access•Robin Coningham, R A E Coningham et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2013•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 16

Key locations identified with the lives of important religious founders have often been extensively remodelled in later periods, entraining the destruction of many of the earlier remains. Recent UNESCO-sponsored work at the major Buddhist centre of Lumbini in Nepal has sought to overcome these limitations, providing direct archaeological evidence of the nature of an early Buddhist shrine and a secure chronology. The excavations revealed a sequenc…

Clare Ellis, Iona Anthony et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2008

Total excavation revealed a later prehistoric multi-ditched and multi-palisaded enclosure succeeded by unenclosed settlement. Despite the obvious investment of time and labour in the construction of the numerous palisades and three large concentric ditches episodic, seasonal use of the site is strongly indicated. Total artefact retrieval produced a cannel coal assemblage which has thrown light on the manufacture of the cannel coal bracelets so ty…

  • Thermoluminescence screening of non‐diagnostic sherds from stream sediments to obtain a preliminary alluvial chronology

    Open Access•Katleen Deckers, D C W Sanderson et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2004•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

In this paper, simple thermoluminescence (TL) dating procedures utilizing non‐diagnostic sherds from fluvial deposits are described. This approach may provide preliminary insights into the chronology of fluvial sequences in areas where transported ceramics are common, but alluvial chronologies are not well developed. Our method deviates from conventional TL‐ dating methods in that simple screening measurements are made from small, heavily abraded…
