    Early cuneiform and hieroglyphic writings indicate that women practiced birth control by taking contraceptive or abortive herbs. Male seed had a long, indeterminate period before fertilization. Women could restore menstruation. Law protected the right of males in wedlock to have a child. Surgical abortion was available, dangerous, and rare.
