Race and Slavery in the Middle East
In the nineteenth century hundreds of thousands of Africans were forcibly migrated northward to Egypt and other eastern Mediterranean destinations, yet relatively little is known about them. Studies have focused mainly on the mamluk and harem slaves of elite households, who were mostly white, and on abolitionist efforts to end the slave trade, and most have relied heavily on western language sources. In the past forty years new sources have becom…
Libya, the Trans-Saharan Trade of Egypt, and ‘Abdallah Al-Kahhal, 1880–1914
Egypt's trans-Saharan trade along its fromier with Libya underwent perceptible changes in the course of the nineteenth century. The development of strong commercial ties with the kingdom of Darfur during the previous century and the implantation of an imperial regime in the eastern Sudan, beginning in 1820, dramatically changed the direction of trade with Black Africa, away from the Sudan toward the east. Recently I completed an initial foray into the underutilized 1848 census of Egypt that was commissioned by Muhammad ʿAli in the last years of his long rule. This enormous unpublished document provides a fascinating bird's-eye view of Cairo in the middle of the 19th century, permitting one to snoop into thousands of households, great and small, in Egypt's greatest and largest city to see a population undergoing profound social transformation. Here…

Asyūṭ in the 1260's (1844-53)
The early thirteenth-century poet, Ibn al-SactI, penned a few memorable lines about Asyut, extolling the beauty of its rural setting, a mythological bird seen in the light of the full moon, the pearl-like quality of the morning dew, a brook, gentle breezes and clouds that speckled the firmament, his muse playing nonsensically with the rhyming possibilities of the final ta in the spelling of the city's name.1 By the end of the nineteenth century, …
