Devil's Den, Florida
In the early 1960s, human skeletal remains of several individuals were found in apparent association with late Pleistocene mammals during an excavation at Devil's Den sinkhole in Levy County, Florida. The rarity of these associations in Florida and across the Americas is well-known. Most sites suggesting this antiquity contain diagnostic lithic and bone artifacts, but no human remains. Very little has been published about the Devil's Den site, an…

One Hundred-one Canoes on the Shore – 3–5,000 year old Canoes from Newnans Lake, Florida
Newnans Lake is located east of the city of Gainesville in Alachua County, Florida. As the lake level dropped during extreme drought conditions in April 2000, hikers and bird watchers noticed wooden objects, including dugout canoes, appearing on the newly exposed shoreline. In the summer of 2000, with emergency funds furnished by the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources many of the canoes were partially excavated, measure…

American Indians After 1492
American Indians After A.D. 1492
Perfect counterimages were created when Europeans and American Indians met for the first time in the late 15th century. Unfortunately, historic documents have preserved only one‐half of the image. How did the survivors of epidemics, enslavements, and brutalities react to the disruptions in their lives brought about by trespassers from another continent? In this article I examine the historic and archeological evidence for migration into Florida a…
Prehistoric Quarries and Lithic Production
Quarry studies
Quarry sites contain thousands of years of debitage in quantities that can be studied statistically. Paradoxically, quarry sites, unlike other types of sites, have not been subjected to routine archaeological inquiry. In this paper I describe procedures we are using in Florida to resolve questions about lithic technology and the antiquity of chert quarries. The enduring consequence of the research is the realization that extraction methods utiliz…
Prehistoric Quarries and Lithic Production
This book was originally published in 1984. For over a million years rocks provided human beings with the essential raw materials for the production of tools. Nevertheless we still know very little about the behaviour and processes that resulted in the creation of archaeological sites at or near lithic quarries. In the past archaeologists have placed much emphasis on the process of 'exchange' in their analysis of prehistoric economies while large…
Florida's Prehistoric Stone Technology
Contraband in Spanish Colonial Ships
The investigation of a shipwreck must extend beyond the uniqueness of the single event in order to have interpretative value for social scientists. One or even several shipwrecks will not necessarily represent a universe. Since statistically significant numbers of shipwrecks may never be studied, methods of inquiry must be devised where quantity is not a prime concern. When we noted the discrepancy between cargoes listed on ships manifests and ca…
Weathering of Thermally Altered Prehistoric Stone Implements
Many of the tools used by prehistoric man were thermally altered prior to manufacture. This treatment made it easier to shape the stone and provided superior performance from the completed artifact. This investigation shows the effects of thermal alteration on the weathering rate of Florida Chert. Infrared reflection spectroscopy is used to monitor the extent of weathering and to illustrate alterations on the chert surface due to heating
Electron Microprobe Analysis of Weathered Florida Chert
Underlying paleo-Indian period artifacts, deeply weathered chert implements have been recovered in Florida from a sandy clay horizon heretofore considered culturally sterile. Although the stratigraphic position of the stone implements in the sandy clay deposit has been demonstrated without question, dating has been a problem because no carbon-containing material has been preserved. Thus experiments were undertaken to investigate the environmental…

The Key Marco, Florida Collection
The organic material, especially the wooden objects, from the Key Marco, Florida collection are badly warped and are in an advanced stage of disintegration. An experiment was conducted to preserve a wooden stool from this collection in order to prevent further degradation. The specimen was treated with polyethylene glycol (Carbowax 1000). The loss of the specimens for study from this famous site is lamentable and should cause archaeologists to re…
Thermal Alteration of Silica Minerals
Extensive experiments indicate that the application of heat to flint materials may have conferred an advantage to primitive man in the manufacture of chipped-stone implements. When Florida cherts are slowly heated to between 350° and 400°C and maintained at this temperature for sustained periods, a desirable change occurs in the fracture properties. This alteration takes place when the melting point of the impurities within the intercrystalline s…
