Zooming in and out the outcomes of geophysical research at the Western Tripolye culture site Kamenets-Podolskiy (Tatarysky)
This paper reports the results of magnetic surveys contextualized with the landscape via water drainage analysis, and summarizes the results of excavations at the Cucuteni-Tripolye settlement Kamenets-Podolskiy (Tatarysky), 3950–3900 BCE. Incorporation of topographic information and water drainage analysis to the studies of settlement structures revealed by magnetometry makes it possible to understand how such features function and, therefore, th…
What is Visible to Whom in Geophysical Data? A Psychological Study on the Analysis of Magnetic Maps from Soba (Sudan)
Experts in magnetometry detected almost 16% more features as archaeologists, Psychological tools may aid communication among recipients of geophysical data
Multi-Method non-invasive investigation of the Pefkakia/Demetrias site (Thessaly, Greece)
Highlights : Hellenistic town mapped accurately with orthogonal streets and living quarters, Limited insights gained into earlier activity, Area selection for excavations to reveal pre-Hellenistic remains facilitated
Landscapes through Time
Czermno / Cherven’
The article discusses the results of the latest interdisciplinary studies on Site 2, ‘Zameczek’, a stronghold complex in Czermno (historical Cherven’). The fieldwork completed in 2022-2023 focused on Site 2 and included noninvasive investigations (GPR and LiDAR prospection), sondage excavation, laboratory analysis and conservation of archaeological finds, absolute dating, and desktop studies. The research objectives and questions formulated when …

Topography and buildings of an early Islamic Andalusi city
Madīnat Ilbīra was the capital of one of the territorial organization units of the Umayyad state. The city was founded in the second half of the ninth century, and then abandoned in the eleventh century as a result of the collapse of the Caliphate of Córdoba and the transfer of the centre of the region to Granada. Its remains were located only in the nineteenth century. Modern excavations and non-invasive geophysical prospections carried out in t…
The spatial organisation of Soba
Recent geophysical exploration and excavations, together with new radiocarbon dates, have shed light on the spatial organisation of medieval Soba in Sudan, and can partly be connected to the oral histories of the city's demise
Survey of Soba (Sudan)
Research in Soba – the capital of the medieval kingdom of Alwa.– Geophysical methods applied to study the spatial organization of the city
Shedding light on the Sudanese Dark Ages
The article presents the results of magnetic and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) research carried out in Old Dongola in northern Sudan in 2018 and 2020, within the framework of a project designed to investigate the transition from Christianity to Islam taking place in the capital of the Nubian kingdom of Makuria. The integrated datasets from the application of two geophysical methods, of which one is the standard magnetic method used on sites in t…
An integrated geophysical and archaeological approach to the study of the Late Medieval castle in Żelechów in Mazovia, Poland
In this paper, we present the results of the 2016–2019 study of the residence of the noble Ciołek family, in Żelechów (Mazovia, eastern Poland). The complex, located on a marshy and overgrown terrain, was recently discovered through the Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data analysis. The site was surveyed using three geophysical methods: magnetometry (fluxgate gradiometer); electrical resistivity (two level twin‐probe profiling); ground‐penetrating …
Interdisciplinary Research into the Legacy of the Medieval Metropolis of Soba in a Modern Khartoum Suburb
Recent research at Soba focuses on the tangible and intangible heritage of the medieval capital of Alwa kingdom, whose remains cover approximately 275 ha. About 222 ha of this area has been built up or transformed into agricultural land in the past 30 years. An ethnographic survey was also carried out in the built-up area to understand how the residents engage with the archaeological heritage and material remains. The undeveloped area of the capi…
Wild and Domestic Cattle in the Ancient Nile Valley
Archaeological sites at Affad (Sudan) are the only ones in northeastern Africa providing ostological remains of both African aurochs (Bos primigenius), dated to 50 kya, and domestic cattle, dated to 7–6 kya. The evidence enables studies of behavioral diversity between taurids. Strontium isotope analyses of the tooth enamel of both Pleistocene and Holocene ruminants suggest the local origin of these animals. The archaeozoological analysis reveals …
Taposiris Magna et Plinthine (2019)
The PalaeoAffad Project and the Prehistory of the Middle Nile
Current work on the PalaeoAffad Project allows us to contribute greatly to the legacy of prehistoric research in the Middle Nile Valley. This paper presents the state of research on Late Pleistocene settlement on both banks of the river. Based on absolute dates obtained in the Affad Basin (since MIS5 up to the 5th millennium BP), the prehistory of the area has become an important reference point for general NE-African studies. We were able to inv…
Affad 3.0/Cattle+. Field seasons 2017 and 2018 of the PalaeoAffad Project
The first Affad was the one we saw when the archaeological sites there were first investigated at the beginning of the century. The second Affad, which is the region that we have been exploring in the past 15 years, bore many signs of modern Sudanese culture encroaching upon the desert. In 2009, an asphalt road cut through the desert and shortly thereafter, the Debba bridge and power lines were constructed, the latter coming from a hydroelectric …
Developing a New Approach to Research at Soba, the Capital of the Medieval Kingdom of Alwa
Soba was the capital of one of the medieval kingdoms of Sahelian Africa. The remains are located on the right bank of the Blue Nile, approximately 15 km from Khartoum’s downtown. It was the power centre for Nubian rulers of the Kingdom of Alwa, directly comparable to the main cities of the two other Nubian kingdoms, Nobadia and Makuria. Archaeological research has demonstrated that the metropolitan cities of Nobadia and Makuria had exceptional ch…
