Sexual Identity Confusion and Problem Behaviors in Adolescents
Sexual identity confusion can add to the stress of adolescence. We used gender development, identity formation, and risk/resilience theories to study factors that protect sexually confused youth from risks (e.g., suicidal thoughts, substance use, delinquency). This article explores some of the lessons a university‐based evaluation team learned while attempting to hire, retain, and work with staff members from a local Hmong community. These staff members were hired to assist a federally‐funded community collaborative with implementing and evaluating a family strengthening program for Hmong families with adolescents. The Influence of Parental Support, Knowledge, and Authoritative Parenting on Hmong and European American Adolescent Development
This study used a community-wide survey of adolescents to compare adolescent perceptions of parental support, knowledge, and authoritative decision making in samples of Hmong and European Americans. Additional analyses considered variation in parental influence on adolescent outcomes across these groups. Action-oriented research is a methodological approach for doing collaborative research with practitioners and community partners that can inform practice, programs, community development, and policy while contributing to the scientific knowledge base. This article discusses how family scholars can use action-oriented research to work together with community partners to address their need for useful information about their practices and programs. …

This study explores the relationship between sexual abuse and two problem outcomes binge drinking and suicidal ideation in a sample of 42568 adolescents. The effects of current and prior sexual abuse on these outcomes were examined for females and males separately. In recent years there has been a growing interest in research approaches that can better inform policy and practice and lead to social action. This article describes four models of research: action, participatory, empowerment, and feminist research. Factors Associated with Sexual Risk-Taking Behaviors among Adolescents
The author examines factors which distinguish between sexually active adolescents who are at risk for pregnancy and for sexually transmitted diseases and sexually active teens who are at lower risk for these outcomes. Study findings are based upon a representative survey of 2567 13-19 year-olds in twelve school districts in four rural Midwestern counties. In search of personality traits
Naturally occurring prosocial and dominance behaviors were observed via multiple methods in four groups of adolescents. Individuals varied considerably in their frequency of prosocial and dominance behaviors, regardless of the method employed.
