Harsh discipline in adolescence
The current study examined 13-year-old adolescents' self-reports regarding the prevalence, frequency, and emotional experiences of harsh discipline (psychological aggression, corporal punishment, severe assault) from both mothers and fathers. We further investigated how mothers' childhood experiences of physical discipline were associated with their current disciplinary practices through parental attitudes and emotional dysregulation in the conte…
Early Maternal Parenting Profiles and Subsequent Child Well‐Being in an Asian Cohort
Objective To identify parenting profiles among Singaporean mothers of young children and to examine the longitudinal implications of these profiles for children's well‐being during middle childhood. Background The universality of traditional parenting styles (e.g., authoritative, authoritarian), established in Western contexts, and their implications for child well‐being, has been called into question, with studies conducted with Asian population…
Maternal Use of Physical Discipline and Children's Externalizing Problems Across Childhood in Singapore
This study explored the reciprocal associations between maternal physical discipline and children's externalizing problems across childhood, distinguishing between trait-like (i.e., between-person) and state-like (i.e., within-person) differences. We used data from 604 dyads in Singapore, a context where physical discipline is commonly accepted. We analyzed maternal physical discipline and children's externalizing problems at three timepoints bet…

Early prosociality is conditional on opportunity cost and familiarity with the target
Developmental research in the past decade has painted the picture of a gregarious child ready to engage in a range of prosocial behavior, but less is known about the situational factors that moderate this behavior. The present study investigated the effects of cost and familiarity on children's readiness to help the victim of a moral transgression. Opportunity cost was operationalized as the time and effort expended on providing help, that could …
Machine learning estimation of users’ implicit and explicit aesthetic judgments of web-pages
The aesthetic appearance of websites can influence the perception of their usability, reliability, and trustworthiness. A majority of studies investigating the relationship between aesthetic features of web pages and their user perception consider only a limited number of web pages’ visual features and focus exclusively on explicit aesthetic judgments. In this work, we aim to overcome the limitations of previous works by employing multiple visual…
The acquisition of the gender-brilliance stereotype
Past research has explored children's gender stereotypes about specific intellectual domains, such as mathematics and science, but less is known about the acquisition of domain-general stereotypes about the intellectual abilities of women and men. During 2017 and 2018, the authors administered Implicit Association Tests to Chinese Singaporean adults and 8- to 12-year-olds (N = 731; 58% female) to examine the gender stereotype that portrays except…
The developmental trajectories of racial categorization and explicit racial biases in Singapore
The present study investigated the development of racial categorization and explicit racial biases in Singaporean Chinese preschoolers (N = 73). Three- to six-year-olds were found to be generally adept at categorizing novel faces by race and displayed significant improvements in their racial categorization abilities at six years old. Additionally, the strength of children's racial preferences varied along the developmental trajectory. While three…
Parents with greater religiosity lie less to their children
The current study extends the limited body of research on the relationship between parental lying and religiosity by investigating 4 types of lies told by Singaporean parents. We found that in contrast to Chinese and American parents (Heyman, Hsu, Fu, & Lee, 2013), greater religiosity among Singaporean parents is related to less lying to children, with the exception of white lies. This pattern of findings suggests that the effect of religiosity o…
Being a Parent during Covid-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant effects on people worldwide, yet the psychological impact of collective traumas may differ at the individual and societal level. Parents may be exposed to greater pandemic-related stressors, yet also are more likely than non-parents to have social interactions during social distancing mandates. Furthermore, varying degrees of pandemic severity in countries may alter the adverse outcomes of pandemic stress…
Contrasting lexical biases in bilingual English–Mandarin speech
Is noun dominance in early lexical acquisition a widespread or a language-specific phenomenon? Thirty Singaporean bilingual English–Mandarin learning toddlers and their mothers were observed in a mother-child play interaction. For both English and Mandarin, toddlers’ speech and reported vocabulary contained more nouns than verbs across book reading and toy playing. In contrast, their mothers’ speech contained more verbs than nouns in both English…

What Men Do When a Baby Cries
Infants’ crying modulates parental behaviors, which in turn, ideally, lead to calming the infant. The mutually beneficial reciprocity between infants’ and parents’ behaviors is conserved across mammalian species. Although some studies highlight similarities in responses to infant cries across gender, other studies report differences in their behaviors and brain activity. Zeifman and colleagues in this Special Issue found that high levels of infan…
The role of affect in the positive self
This research investigated the role of American and Chinese children's affect in the valence of their views of themselves. In 2 studies (Ns = 825 and 397), children in the United States and China reported on their affect (e.g., positive and negative emotions) and described themselves multiple times over the 7th and 8th grades. The more positive and less negative children's affect, the more positive their descriptions of themselves over time in bo…
The social self in early adolescence
This research examined how children's inclusion of social personal attributes (e.g., talkative and argumentative) in their views of themselves changes over early adolescence in the United States and China. In 2 studies (N = 825 in Study 1 and 394 in Study 2) using open-ended methods (e.g., completion of "I . . ." stems), American and Chinese children described themselves multiple times during the 7th and 8th grades. Conceptions of the self in ter…
The Influence of Adult Input on Children’s Early Word Learning
