The Globalization of International Migration? A Conceptual and Data-Driven Synthesis
Although the globalization of international migration is commonly accepted as a general tendency in contemporary migration patterns (de Haas, Castles, and Miller 2020, 9), the corresponding body of empirical evidence is mixed and fragmented. Our review of global migration patterns over the past half-century highlights how the theories, expectations, and ultimately findings may vary depending on the specific definitions, vantage points, and measur…

Crimmigrating Narratives
Examining what we call "crimmigrating narratives," we show that US immigration court criminalizes non-citizens, cements forms of social control, and dispenses punishment in a non-punitive legal setting. Building on theories of crimmigration and a sociology of narrative, we code, categorize, and describe third-party observations of detained immigration court hearings conducted in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, from July 2018 to June 2019. We identify a…
Link to the Land and Mino-Pimatisiwin (Comprehensive Health) of Indigenous People Living in Urban Areas in Eastern Canada
Mino-pimatisiwin is a comprehensive health philosophy shared by several Indigenous peoples in North America. As the link to the land is a key element of mino-pimatisiwin , our aim was to determine if Indigenous people living in urban areas can reach mino-pimatisiwin . We show that Indigenous people living in urban areas develop particular ways to maintain their link to the land, notably by embracing broader views of "land" (including urban areas)…
The Politics of Indigenous Peoples-Settler Relations in Quebec
The inclusive nature of recent northern economic development plans in Canada is seen by many as a positive transformation of the way settler state and society relate to indigenous peoples. Several scholars have inferred that indigenous peoples-settler relations are increasingly guided by a logic of hybridization and interculturalism, whereby settler state and society are now more willing to empower indigenous peoples and relinquish the historical…
Inventing New Places
The presence of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in the urban centres of Québec (Canada) is no longer simply the result of individual trajectories; it is also the result of collective and institutional initiatives. Aboriginal collective action is changing, and, as a consequence, new forms of Aboriginal citizenship are emerging, as well as new expressions of Aboriginal identity. These transformations have repercussions across the whole of Qu…
Representing Aboriginal Self-Government and First Nations/State Relations
This paper is primarily concerned with the way in which the strategies Indigenous peoples choose to address and deal with state power are being characterized by recent scholarly assessments of territorial and self-government agreements in Canada. The authors contend that by emphasizing almost exclusively seemingly irreversible structural determinants (such as colonialism and the capitalist logic of dispossession), the interpretative orientation o…
