  • Dasymetric Estimation of Population Density and Areal Interpolation of Census Data

    James B Holt, C P Lo et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2004•Cited by: 13•References: 1

This paper describes techniques to compute and map dasymetric population densities and to areally interpolate census data using dasymetrically derived population weights. These techniques are demonstrated with 1980-2000 census data from the 13-county Atlanta metropolitan area. Land-use/land-cover data derived from remotely sensed satellite imagery were used to determine the areal extent of populated areas, which in turn served as the denominator …

  • Visual and Statistical Comparisons of Surface Modeling Techniques for Point-based Environmental Data

    Xiaojun Yang, Thomas W Hodler•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2000

Existing studies on spatial interpolation tend to overplay statistical perspective, paying little attention the locality and the visual performance of generated surface models. In an attempt to bridge these gaps in literatures, the authors compared the performance of five surface modelling methods, using a set of integrative criteria including absolute and relative statistical accuracy, visual pleasantness and faithfulness of generated surface mo…

  • The Atlas of Pennsylvania

    Thomas W Hodler, David J Cuff et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1991

  • Cartographic Modeling Of Hydrothermal Resource Potential

    Thomas W Hodler•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•1983

The potential for utilizing hydrothermal (low temperature) resources can be evaluated by using a three-dimensional cartographic model. The four components of the model include temperature of the geothermal water, topographic slope, land elevation and supply economics. Each individual component is scaled ordinally and a perspective drawing of the site utility is computer generated. Temperature distribution is determined from an isothermal linear c…

  • Residents' preparedness and response to the Kalamazoo Tornado

    Open Access•Thomas W Hodler•ARTICLE•Disasters•1982•References: 2

A survey was conducted of individuals residing directly in the path of the tornado that hit Kalamazoo, Michigan, on 13th May 1980. The residents' tornado preparedness and response were examined in an effort to evaluate the city's emergency warning system. The system was adequate for people on the east side of the city and lacking for west side residents. Other factors pertaining to the storm event and human response were also evaluated
