  • Nonconscious Nudges

Open Access•Juliano Laran, Chris Janiszewski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2019•References: 63

A person can use a variety of strategies to sustain the pursuit of a conscious goal (e.g., deliberate on the goal, monitor goal progress, increase goal commitment). However, less is known about how to sustain the pursuit of a nonconscious goal, a reality that is reflected in the common finding that nonconscious goal pursuit typically persists for only one choice episode. This research investigates two factors that help sustain the pursuit of a no…

  • The Bad Can Be Good

Open Access•Anthony Salerno, Juliano Laran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 61

Benign and malicious envy are a consequence of an unfavorable upward comparison to another individual (i.e., a negative self-other discrepancy). Benign (malicious) envy occurs when people believe the envied individual deserves (does not deserve) his/her advantage. Prior research has shown that benign envy motivates a person to address the self-other discrepancy via self-improvement, whereas malicious envy does not. This research shows that both t…

Integrated healthcare (IH), the systematic coordination of physical and behavioral health needs, is instrumental to the emerging healthcare landscape under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. To ensure social work students are prepared to practice as part of IH transdisciplinary teams, a 15-week advanced practice course was piloted and evaluated at two universities for 58 master's-level students. Analysis of quantitative and qualitati…

  • Pride and Regulatory Behavior

Anthony Salerno, Juliano Laran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 60

Prior research has demonstrated that while people experience pride after an accomplishment, its experience can both encourage and discourage subsequent regulatory behavior. The current research shows that this seemingly contradictory influence can be accounted for by considering the information about the event that generated the pride (i.e., appraisal information) and whether or not a self-regulatory goal is active. In the absence of a self-regul…

  • Hedonic Eating Goals and Emotion

Anthony Salerno, Juliano Laran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 76

This article uses the functionalist perspective of emotion to demonstrate that the influence of sadness on indulgent consumption depends on the presence of a hedonic eating goal. Sadness heightens a person's sensitivity to the potentially harmful consequences of indulgent consumption, which decreases indulgence when a hedonic eating goal is salient. As sadness is often associated with a loss, this protective function is geared toward preventing f…

  • The Social Background of Seventeenth-Century Emigration to America

    Open Access•Anthony Salerno•ARTICLE•Journal of British Studies•1979•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Students of twentieth-century migration generally agree that in any analysis of human migration two essential questions must be answered: Who are the migrants? And why did they leave? The questions seem obvious, but as they relate to seventeenth-century emigration to the American colonies, they are difficult to answer with precision. The records cannot be expected to reveal much about the emigrants as persons because they were ordinary people. If…
