This study analyses how NRK's (the Norwegian Public Service Broadcaster) debate programme, «Redaksjon EN», was produced during the election campaign period in 2003.In order to reveal the premises for the programme, the production processes behind it were followed closely. The analysis presented here concentrates, in particular, on the interaction between TV journalists and politicians during this period. After the election period was over, in order to shed light on both sides of the relationship politics-journalism, representatives from the political parties were interviewed about their perspectives on cooperation with the TV team.It is concluded that TV journalists are in a powerful position in relation to the political parties during this vital phase in a democracy. To gain access to the TV studios, politicians must fulfil the journalistic criteria for what makes «good TV»; they need to inhabit a status as celebrities, they must be able to participate in debates at short notice, and they must present arguments that allow for polarized, «high temperature», debate. The type of power TV journalists possess, however, is ambiguous: Journalists are constantly judged by the audience scores of their programmes, and are thus highly dependent on high audience numbers if they are to keep their position within the field
