Masseria Quattro Macine’ — a deserted medieval village and its territory in southern Apulia

An interim report on field survey, excavation and document analysis

‘MASSERIA QUATTRO MACINE’ — UN VILLAGGIO MEDIEVALE ABBANDONATO ED IL SUO TERRITORIO NELIA PUGLIA MERIDIONALE: UNA RELAZIONE PRELIMINARE SULLA RICOGNIZIONE, LO SCAVO E L'ANALISI DOCUMENTARIA Questa relazione presenta i risultati dei primi quattro anni di un progetto archeologico che esamina l'entroterra di Otranto, in Puglia meridionale. La ricognizione suggerisce che l'area vide un incremento dell'insediamento sia nel periodo tardo Romano/alto Bizantino che nel tardo Medio Evo. Gli scavi riguardano due siti principali. Il primo sito è quello della chiesa monumentale di Le Centoporte, Giurdignano, che sembra essere stata costruita come parte di un monastero tra il tardo quinto e l'inizio del sesto secolo. Sembra che la costruzione non sia mai stata completata e che intorno al settimo secolo fu riprogettata in maniera che potesse ospitare una piccola comunità all'interno delle sue mura. Il secondo sito è quello del villaggio medievale di Quattro Macine, che potrebbe essere stato fondato prima della conquista normanna della Puglia, nel 1071, per essere poi abbandonato durante il XIV secolo ed infine sostituito da una fattoria. Due chiese, di fondazione normanna e bizantina, con i loro cimiteri associati, vengono descritte. Ulteriori ritrovamenti vengono anche discussi, con lo scopo di presentare un modello preliminare di cambiamento dell'insediamento e di uso del territorio
