This paper describes a computer based laboratory experience for the introductory class. Obstacles to the use of the computer by both the student and the instructor are reviewed and a system to reduce these obstacles is presented. This system focuses on the interpretation of data by the student rather than on learning how to use a computer. I describe the use of SPSS to analyze NORC General Social Survey data. I show how the system is used in my introductory classes and how the laboratory assignments relate to the class lectures. The system I have developed is compared to available commercial packages and the relative advantages of each are discussed
