‘Englishness and Medieval Anglo‐Jewry’ is a discussion of (and reflection on) the manner in which English historians have dealt with, or omitted to deal with, the history of medieval English Jewry. It examines, in particular, the ritual murder charges at Norwich in 1144 and Lincoln in 1255, the York massacre of 1190, the government's exploitation of the Jews, the gentry's hatred of them, and their expulsion from England in 1290 by Edward I. In the course of the article aspects of ‘Englishness’ which relate to Jews are presented; these Anglo‐Saxon attitudes, it is suggested, are so deeply embedded as to be well‐nigh unconscious; they are undoubtedly negligent
