The possibility of pagan symbolism depicting grave goods continuing into the Christian centuries is examined. The greater frequency of symbols on medieval memorials in areas formerly under pagan Viking control is stressed. The symbols most commonly carved on memorials are those most often discovered with pagan burial or interred with Christian priestly burial
