Hirsch is Professor Emerita of History at Loyola University Chicago. Her research focuses on urban America and issues of class, gender, race, and ethnicity. She is the author of After the Strike: A Century of Labor Struggle at Pullman (University of Illinois Press, 2003), Roots of the American Working Class: The Industrialization of Crafts in Newark, 1800–1860 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1978), and co-author, with Robert I. Goler, of A City Comes of Age: Chicago in the 1890s (Chicago Historical Society, 1990). She is co-editor, with Lewis A. Erenberg, of The War in American Culture: Society and Consciousness during World War II (University of Chicago Press, 1996).
