Exploring the relationship between depression, suicide, and Covid-19 contagion fear among iranian male and female students

The fear of contagion during COVID-19, amplified by news of variants, has been linked to distress, depression, and increased risk of suicidal behaviors. Studies have highlighted these negative outcomes can vary greatly across age, gender, and nationality; however, there are few reports on Iranian samples. Based on the literature, this study focused on university students and explored the role of gender in the associations between depression, suicide, and fear of contagion. In a cross-sectional study of 364 Iranian university students, women exhibited higher depression, suicidal behavior, and contagion fear than men. Regression and correlation tests highlighted the impact of contagion fear on suicidal behavior, even after accounting for depression, particularly for women. This suggests that fear of contagion in response to the COVID-19 pandemic may play a role in the pandemic's varied impact on suicidality
