Improvisation offers an African‐based performance strategy for the development of an African‐American theatre aesthetic. As a performance strategy, improvisation aims to move theatrical productions toward efficacious performance by stimulating healing among the community members involved. The essay documents two productions which use improvisation as a fundamental performance strategy. Analysis of the two productions identifies unresolved tensions in developing an African‐American theatre aesthetic and suggests directions for the continued exploration of dramaturgical alternatives based in African performance practices
