The geographical patterns of starchy staple consumption in West Africa have been mapped in terms of their relative dietary importance. These staples were found to have regional patterns of usage which were the result of plant ecology and historical diffusion. The usage of individual staples was found to be far from static and had changed significantly in this century. The most important change has been the displacement of maize, yams and rice by manioc in the more humid parts of West Africa. Notes This is the first of a four part series on the ecology of dietary patterns and nutritional status in West Africa. The region encompasses the countries of former French West Africa, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Upper Volta, Niger, Guinea, the Ivory Coast, Togo and Dahomey, the former British colonies of Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria and Portuguese Guinea and Liberia. The object is to utilize available material to formulate a nutritional geography, namely the spatial and ecological aspects of dietary patterns and nutritional status.
