After four or five decades, the field of International Development Studies (IDS) is still both dynamic and in demand, especially in Canada, as reflected by the present project and special issue. Yet the definition and direction of the field remain problematic. And while globalization has yet to completely subvert development discourses, us unilateralism may still so succeed, IDS has continued to be flexible and inclusive, incorporating new issues and actors, technologies, and coalitions. Now, however, it faces challenges from new programs such as global or new security studies as well as development disillusionment and exhaustion. RÉSUMÉ Après quatre ou cinq décennies d'existence, les études du développement international conservent leur dynamisme et restent en demande, notamment au Canada. Notre projet et notre numéro spécial l'illustrent bien. Pourtant, la définition et la direction du champ d'études posent encore problème, Méme si la globalisation n'a pas encore complètement subverti les discours sur le développement, l'unilatéralisme des États-Unis pourrait bien y parvenir. Les études du développement international ont continué d'ètre fiexibles et inclusives; elles ont intégré des nouveaux enjeux et acteurs, ainsi que des nouvelles technologies et coalitions. Elles se trouvent toutefois confrontées maintenant à des nouveaux programmes, par exemple sur la globalisation ou la sécurité, et doivent composer avec la désillusion et l'épuisement dans le monde du développement
