The article deals with the historical circumstances of the life and work of General Rudolf Maister and the social perception of his actions through the 20th century when he transformed himself from the controversial and peripheral personalities of Slovenian society into one of the greatest political and military heroes of the Slovenian state. *** Članek obravnava zgodovinske okoliščine življenja in delovanja generala Rudolfa Maistra in družbeno percepcijo njegovih dejanj skozi 20. stoletje, ko se je iz sporne in obrobne osebnosti slovenske družbe preoblikoval v enega največjih političnih in vojaških junakov slovenske države
