Dieses Kapitel nimmt eine kritische Bestandsaufnahme vor, in der die Hauptprobleme der Sozialökologie seit ihren Anfängen skizziert werden. Zugleich wird eine konstruktive Neuformulierung ihrer theoretischen Postulate versucht. Hauptprobleme der Sozialökologie sind vor allem: die Ableitung von Zusammenhängen zwischen sozialräumlichen Strukturen und menschlichem Handeln; unscharfe Erklärung der Verursachungsmechanismen bestimmter sozialräumlicher Strukturen; mehrdeutige Interpretation des Begriffs Gemeinschaft; übertriebener Environmentalismus ; uneinheitliche Interpretation des Begriffs Raum; das Fehlen historischer Ansätze. Fortschritte der Sozialökologie sind eng verbunden mit der Absorption moderner „theories of structuration“, wobei die morphologischen Resultate menschlichen Handelns ebensoviel Aufmerksamkeit erhalten wie das Handeln selbst. Bei solcher Betrachtung sind sozialräumliche Strukturen das Resultat des Strebens von Akteuren um die Optimierung ihres räumlichen Standortes
