The author describes an act of forgetfulness and considers its effects on the therapy with a patient. The enactment represents an opportunity for the therapist to unveil an unconscious aggressive and abandoning attitude toward her patient, an aspect that was initially hidden by a more benign exterior. This required the therapist to reflect on the projection of the internal object and its role in transference. The internal object is here considered in Berne’s terms as the Parent in the Child ego state. Beginning with the idealizing transference, the therapist and patient were able to explore survival strategies and create a new relationship in which it was possible to be explicit in expressing the patient’s needs. The author proposes an ego state model that represents the multiplicity of the self by highlighting the dynamic aspect of self-development
