Designing interactive learning environments for Mandarin number education

This study explores the effectiveness of Teaching Numbers in Mandarin (TNM) through Engaging Activities (EA) by Interactive Classifiers (IC), utilizing hands-on techniques such as interactive games, exercises, and group activities. By integrating IC into Mandarin number (MN) instruction, the approach enhances student engagement, comprehension, and retention compared to traditional teaching strategies. Data were collected from math teachers in six Chinese schools through interviews and questionnaires. Findings indicate a significant improvement in students' understanding and application of MN when IC is incorporated into teaching. Activities involving IC foster student interest and motivation, leading to accelerated learning. Moreover, the study highlights that students' prior knowledge influences the effectiveness of TNM. The use of IC supports long-term retention of numerical concepts, demonstrating a shift from rote memorization to interactive learning. This research presents a novel pedagogical approach by linking linguistic concepts with interactive engagement, promoting deeper understanding and practical application of MN. The findings highlight the value of IC in Mandarin instruction, particularly in boosting student motivation and facilitating rapid learning
