[Extract:] Since the watershed moment of the 2014 Ebola \nepidemic in West Africa and again in the midst \nof the current COVID-19 crisis, the concept of \nhealth system resilience has been a recurring \ntheme in global health discussions.1 2 Although \nmost frequently used in the context of epidemic \nresponse, resilience has also been framed as a \n‘key pillar’ of health,3 \n and invoked in high-level \ncalls for countries to ‘lead the work on building \nhealth system resilience’.4 \n Yet, as the authors \nof one of several recent reviews observed, the \nconcept of health systems resilience remains \n‘highly confusing’ and ‘still polysemic’.5 \n What \nit means ‘depends on one’s perception, one’s \ndiscipline, one’s function and what one wants \nto achieve’.5 \n In this editorial, I will, from the \nperspective of a health policy and systems \nresearcher, draw out and reflect on some of \nthese tensions, and make some suggestions \nabout how we might achieve greater clarity
