In linguistic anthropology “play” – as interactional frame or sociocultural activity – is considered a special form of social action, a source of metacultural revelation and reflection, and generative of emerging forms of (socio)linguistic structures and sociocultural organization. Current research addresses how all forms of play (e.g. speech play, verbal art, pretense, and many other non‐literal frames of interaction) mediate identities and identifications, social relations and the forms of human creativity and reflexivity that these engender. Ethnographically based studies moreover favor theoretical heterodoxy over orthodoxy, engaging approaches from other subfields and related disciplines (e.g. education, folklore, psychology, sociology). This is especially the case for research in language socialization and peer cultural studies that adopt a “both/and” translinguistic spirit, much like the phenomena under investigation. Scholars must continuously recalibrate their theoretical frameworks and shift perspective to grasp that which by design exploits ambiguity and poses interpretive puzzles for participants and analysts alike
