Few terms in contemporary usage are as evocative as that of “jihad.” Jihad in its Arabic usage is a noun, and is defined literally as “striving” or “struggle.” A jihadist is a Muslim participating in jihad, however, both terms have become conflated in popular culture, political rhetoric, and even scholarship with terrorist violence, extremism, and holy war, a descriptor for conflict involving Muslims. The term, however, is far more nuanced and, indeed, delicate. An appreciation of these nuances and different applications yields significant analytical dividends for scholars working with Islamic sources or, more broadly, for those engaging with the relationship between religion and political conflict.
