Governmentality refers to a modern problematic of government, and its associated practices and rationalities, centered on the economic government of social life. It was coined by Michel Foucault in 1978, and has since come to be applied to a wide range of contexts in the critical social sciences. Geographers have employed the term to help understand how spatial relations play a role in social ordering schemes, and how governmental projects in turn shape and invest spatialities of social life.
