Translation historiography explores changes in the practice and conceptualization of translation over time and space, as well as their causes. This entry focuses on methodological and conceptual issues in and approaches to studying translation history, by drawing on insights from both translation studies and the field of history and by situating the work of translators within broader contexts. The approaches discussed include microhistory, book history, histoire croisée , and connected history (including the study of professional and intellectual networks), the history of the reception of translations, sociological approaches, the intellectual history of translation, and quantitative approaches. The conceptual issues discussed include periodization and the roles of individuals versus larger forces or systems.
