The anthropological study of complex societies raises a number of theoretical and methodological questions that are not adequately resolved by traditional approaches geared to the investigation of simple societies or peasant communities. Techniques of sociological investigation may prove of value in the analysis and comparison of literate societies or segments of such societies. In this paper, we examine the occupational images evidenced by a sample of middle-class Catalans, special attention being paid to the influence that ethnicity and minority group membership have on career choices and the structuring of social reality
