Reconsiderant les arguments de Durkheim sur le lien entre religion et suicide, les AA. ne les trouvent ni consistants ni convaincants. Durkheim etait etonnamment mal informe et fallacieux a l'egard des traits les plus simples de la religion de l'Europe du XIX s. En se basant sur les donnees statistiques officielles des USA, ils testent ses principales affirmations. Ils constatent une forte influence religieuse mais pas de differences tenant aux denominations. Durkheim avait raison de penser qu'un defaut d'integration sociale est cause de suicide, mais, contre Durkheim, il ne faut pas reduire les effets de la religion a ceux de l'integration sociale. Cette etude rejoint les conclusions de celle de Whitney Pope (1976)
