This article explores the relationship between kinship terminology and social action, arguing that kinship terms are not simply labels for pre-existing social relationships but are actively used to create and manipulate social ties. Bloch focuses on how the use of kinship terms can strategically signal alliances, obligations, and relative status within a social group. He draws on ethnographic examples, particularly from Madagascar, to illustrate how the flexibility and ambiguity inherent in kinship terminology allow individuals to navigate complex social situations and pursue their own interests. The article challenges structuralist interpretations of kinship, emphasizing the dynamic and pragmatic aspects of kinship systems
