L'A. explore les implications contraires de 2 modeles de l'action personnelle dans les iles du Pacifique (celui de la « personne morcelable » de M. Strathern pour la Melanesie et celui du « roi divin » de Sahlins pour la Polynesie) a partir de la chefferie melanesienne de la societe des Amoamo du Nord Mekeo (Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinee). La comparaison des competences rituelles des gens du commun et celles des autorites hereditaires, specialistes des echanges maritaux et mortuaires, suggere que l'action personnelle des chefs polynesiens et melanesiens correspond plus a la notion de « personne morcelable » qu'a celle de « hierarchie heroique
