Kinship, Social Networks, and Integration among Ozark Residents and Out-Migrants

The writings of Wirth, Parsons and other theorists on the declining integrative importance of primary ties in modern society have been subject to much empirical criticism. Questionnaire data on 151 Ozark residents and out-migrants are used to examine the effects of migration on three types of informal involvement and the effects of these factors on two measures of individual integration into the community. The theorists' view is supported by the data on kinship, but contradicted by the data on acquaintance ties. The data also suggest that acquaintance network connectedness may contribute to integration, but that connectedness is eroded by migration. The theoretical relevance of the differing relationships of the types of informal involvement to migration and integration is pointed out
