This article briefly discusses some of the many ways of practicing political sociology to illustrate the diversity of the field. It then comments on one of these approaches - the one that privileges macro-historical analyses - highlighting this perspective's preference for observing major transformation processes. Finally, adopting this same option, it discusses some of the ongoing transformations to suggest that they pose considerable theoretical and methodological challenges for political sociology. Recognizing that the challenges in question extend beyond it and effectively question all social sciences, the article argues that the justification for this exercise is the conviction that macro-historical political sociology is a specialization designed to reflect on such transformations and shed light on the obsolescence of certain analytical schemes established by sociological tradition
