Sixteenth‐century Spanish explorers in the South Pacific carefully recorded details of indigenous food plants and crop yields. It is argued that the apparent agricultural wealth of the Solomon Islands encouraged Mendaña's plans for a colonial settlement; the failure of which can be attributed, in part, to their lack of understanding of the traditional economic system
