This essay explores the use of the Gramscian concept of the organic intellectual in two Tunisian periodicals: Outruhat (Theses) and Revue 21/15. Contrary to the common characterization that Marxist thought declined in the 1980s, this essay reveals the lively debate that unfolded in the Maghreb between Marxists and thinkers of political Islam during this period. I demonstrate how two intellectual projects conceptualized the role of the intellectual in a period characterized by a political crisis of the Tunisian political system after independence by analysing not only the tensions and disagreements between Marxist projects and those of political Islam, but also their mutual entanglements and overlapping intellectual genealogies
