In 1820-1821 armies of Muhammad 'Ali overran kingdom of Sinnar and thereafter, until victory of Mahdi after 1880, extended their rule over most of modern Democratic Republic of Sudan. Previous studies of this Turkish period,1 based largely upon government records, have tended to emphasize the administrative activities of ruling institution.2 The present essay, building upon this historiographical legacy, hopes to address broader social issues and to restore Sudanese people to center stage in historical drama of first colonial period through reference to travellers' accounts and examination of legal documents collected from private papers of Sudanese families.3
