The thesis offers an anthropological inquiry about Capulanas Cia de Arte Negra [Capualanas black arts collective], a contemporary artistic and theatrical group based in São Paulo, Brazil.The research process included the analysis on the production and function of the theatrical work in which the discourse and identity narrative of black women are learnt.The work of Capulanas emerge from peripheries of southern São Paulo, and the group in activity since 2007.That said, the study was conducted via an ethnographic investigation and a document analysis that measured the reactions of the artists and a portion of the audience, specifically, the black women.These black women in the audience rearrange and may incorporate their repertoire and sense of belonging as well as the aesthetic/ cultural repertoire from the performance by the production.The hypothesis confirmed is that an artistic and political production allowed to incorporate new meanings to the experience gathered by black women.That is the case of Capulanas and its attempt to work in Capulanas in the margins of the city, considering it asthe focus of subjectivity, agency and urban lives.In this context, it was the audience and its active welcoming that have shown me the way to the analysis and comprehension of the ways the social markers of difference as race, gender and class enact narratives and artistic constructions, political and social actions as well as the significant cultural changes implemented by black women living in the peripheries of São Paulo
