The research analyses (im)politeness at Brazil's Supreme Federal Court during the proceedings of Prosecution 470, known as the Mensalão Trial.It aims to investigate how (im)politeness strategies were used during the proceedings sessions in order to understand the adopted norms of interactions.The study adopts a interactional sociolinguistic framework with a pragmatics interface and based mainly on the politeness theory developed by Brown and Levinson (1987), on the pragmatic principles put forth by Leech (1983) and the studies about impoliteness by Culpeper (1966 and 2002).It uses as methodological resources documental analysis, discourse analysis and conversational analysis.The corpus was built from the recording of broadcast and published interactions between august 2 nd 2012 and december 17 th 2012, with the trial sessions from the open TV channel TV Justiça, totaling around 205 hours of recordings.Among the politeness strategies used by the judges that have been found and analyzed: deference marking, hedging of face threatening acts, complements and face flattering acts, just as the following impoliteness strategies: irony, sarcasm, threats, accusations, specially with the goal of keeping public image, that is, impoliteness as a self-approval strategy, which subverts the expectations related to these strategies.It is hoped that this interactional analysis may contribute to the development of theoretical studies about (im)politeness, socio-interactional studies and, in particular, for the characterization and better comprehension of the selection of (im)politeness strategies related to the institutional context
